Match Report 10th July 2010

On 10th of July the Chargers took on Ballarat University at Footscray

Chargers 45 (7 tries/5 conversions) Vs Ballarat University 15 (3 tries)

The Melbourne Chargers, Australia’s newest gay-inclusive rugby union team, have scored a rousing 45 – 15 win over Ballarat University at their home ground in Footscray. The Chargers forward pack dominated their opposition and provided plenty of possession for their talented backline, who scored five of the seven tries in the bonus point win.

After a tough and physical first half, the Chargers led 21 – 10 at half-time, but with a strong wind at their backs, ran away with the game in the second half. The forwards were most impressive, with Stu, Lenny and Fou cleaning up the best and fairest points.

Importantly, the win puts the Chargers back into contention for the finals, an important goal in their inaugural year.

The Chargers + Sydney Convicts for the 2010 Bingham Cup

This weekend saw 7 Melbourne Chargers travel to Sydney to cement the club's relationship with Sydney based team, The Sydney Convicts, in the lead up to the 2010 Bingham Cup. Seven Melbourne Chargers will join the Sydney Convicts B Team in their quest to win back the 2010 Bingham Cup plate in Minneapolis next week. This weekend, the Chargers joined the Convicts for their games in Sydney as well as attending training sessions & the final tour briefing prior to departure to Minneapolis.

The Chargers players joined forces with the Convicts B team for a very early Saturday morning game against Waverly at Waverly Park. Unfortunately Waverly were too strong for the combined side however the game formed a crucial part of the club's Bingham Cup preparation, giving the coaches an opportunity to trial player in different positions and giving Chargers players the opportunity to showcase their talent for the tour coaches.

On Saturday night the Convicts were rattling the coin bucket to raise money to assist their resident Drag Queen, Maxi Shield, join them for the Bingham Cup. BondiFM was the venue for a night of live musical talent from Convicts players and supporters where enough money was raised to get Maxi to Minneapolis with the squads next week. . From there, we headed to the nightclub The Midnight Shift, a major sponsor of the Sydney Convicts to defend any suggestion that Melbournian's don't party as hard as Sydney-siders.

Just after midnight at the Shift, Maxi Shield initiated the Chargers on stage by hosting a 'lollypop' competition where Chargers Players were paired up and challenged to unwrap a 'lollypop' and pass it through their partners' pants starting at the ankles and retrieving it through the waist. And The first Chargers to put the lollypop in their mouths won! Omega Goodwin & Sam Minter took out the title beating Ben Lancken and Shaun Hewitt.

Sunday morning was the Convict's last training session before Bingham where both the A & B squads trained together under the directions of some special guest Sydney 1st grade coaches. At this session there was no denying the Convicts hunger for victory and commitment to bringing home the silverware.

After training we headed back to the Convicts’ clubhouse where the final tour briefing was held. Before we could be initiated into the team we were required to go through the traditional Convicts initiation that involved sculling beer to the somewhat out-of-tune vocals of the Convicts boys. The Convict’s newest 5 foot 2 coach put us all to shame by sculling beer in one gulp, hardly hitting the sides.

Overall a great weekend where friendships were formed, alliances made and the Melbourne Chargers’ (Albeit with the Sydney Convicts) first Bingham cup Campaign is now underway.

A big thank you goes out the Sydney Convicts for their hospitality and warm welcome and all the boys look forward to some great Rugby in Minneapolis during the tournament.

Melbourne Chargers Defeat Melbourne Uni 17-7

Well this is my first match report and I’m very happy to say the Chargers have scored their on-field win in their short existence.

With a lot of the ‘Chargers’ players away in a practice match with the Convicts in preparation for the Bingham cup, we sort a greater portion of players joining the Chargers from the Full Footscray team. Still, six of our regular players remained in Melbourne and they all played and contributed to a great win.

The early part of the match was dominated by the Charger's forward pack with some big hit-ups and plenty of strong tackling. However, we were unable to convert this into points and were frustrated into giving away some silly penalties. One of these penalties led to the first try of the match, scored by University, which was converted. Melbourne Uni 7- 0.

The Chargers hit back hard and with a new found discipline. The forward pack charged up the ground some aggressive ruck and maul, before giving the ball to the backs for fly-half Andy to score the team’s first try under the posts. Andy converted his own try to level the match at 7 – 7.

The Charger’s second try came just minutes later from the brand of aggressive forwards’ work, with Andy again picking up the spoils. This time, however, he couldn’t convert. Chargers 12 -7.

From the restart, our forwards were immediately on the front foot, and were rewarded with another try going into half-time scored by big number eight Jay. The conversion was unsuccessful. Chargers 17 – 7 at half-time.

As the second half started, light rain began to fall making ball handling difficult and slowing down the play. Although the Chargers spent most the half dominating their opponents, they couldn’t convert this into points and the game ended with the score the same as it was at half-time.

All in all, a good day’s rugby, with the Chargers running out the victors 17 – 7. Coach Kahu’s points went to Jay (3), Stu (2) and Luke Chapman (1).

Andrew (Belly) Bell - Captain
